Zum Wandel der Transportraum-Entomologie
[On the change of cargo space entomology]
Mitteilungen der deutschen Gesellschaft für allgemeine und angewandte Entomologie 13, 149-160
Abstract: The transportation of goods by ship has changed enormously. Thirty years ago in the world-wide trade the cargo was shipped conventionally in the holds of seagoing vessels. In the early system of inspection only the empty hold and the plant products were considered. Many features of construction in the holds of ships favoured the establishment and increase of populations mainly of post harvest insect pests.
Technical developments in the ship and transshipment facilities require a faster transport and reshipment of load. Apart from bulk wares, a wide range of products is transported in containers. In the port of Hamburg the rate of containerisation increased to 93%. Within the container a direct maintenance and inspection of goods is no longer possible. Consignments of plant products arriving at the port of Hamburg include inevitably the import of post harvest insect pests, together with the accompanying "indifferent" and "beneficial" fauna. In 3309 samples from 170 different goods more than 150 insect species were found. The risk of insect introduction with vegetal products by modern sea transport is still increasing.
